Structure of the MJDF
The MJDF consists of a Part 1 and Part 2 examination. Candidates will normally be allowed a maximum of five years in which to complete all parts, but will need to pass Part 1 before progressing to Part 2.
Part 1 examination
Part 1 consists of one paper assessing knowledge and applied knowledge. It includes different formats of multiple choice questions (MCQ) in the form of extended matching question (EMQ) and single best answer (SBA). The paper is three hours in duration.

Part 2 examination
Part 2 will be in the form of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and structured clinical reasoning (SCR) exercise.
Candidates will undertake the OSCE component and the SCR component in two separate examination circuits held on the same day. Each component will take around 2 hours.
The OSCE component
The OSCE component is aimed at assessing the philosophy guiding the candidate’s practice, as well as their competence and application of knowledge.
There will normally be up to 20 OSCE stations of 5-minutes duration each which may include some rest stations, where a candidate will be asked to complete a practical task or a paper-based exercise.
The SCR component
Structured clinical reasoning is an assessment of the candidate’s ability to communicate with peers, reason, evaluate, form opinion and apply knowledge obtained through undergraduate and postgraduate experience to current dental practice. It is not primarily an assessment of recall or knowledge, although these elements are required to undertake SCR.
Candidates will be allowed 48 minutes to consider background material to the scenarios. This will be followed by four 10-minute structured discussions with two different examiners on each occasion on selected aspects of each scenario.

Examination and application submission dates
UK diets of the MJDF examination will normally take place as follows:
- Part 1: End of March/beginning of April and end of September/beginning of October each year
- Part 2: End of May/beginning of June and (late) November/each year
Applicants are not permitted to enter both Part 1 and Part 2 examinations in the same diet
Regulation 3.b.(i) states: Candidates must have written confirmation of a pass in Part 1 before they may apply to sit Part 2.
In accordance with this regulation, applicants are no longer permitted to apply for both the Part 1 and Part 2 examinations in the same diet. Applicants cannot secure a place onto the Part 2 examination, on the basis that they may pass the Part 1. Instead applicants must demonstrate that they have already passed the Part 1.
Those who continue to apply for both the Part 1 and Part 2 in the same diet will still have their application processed and exam fees taken. However their Part 2 admittance will be moved over to the subsequent diet. Applicants may apply for a refund prior to the application closing date of that diet.

Faculty tutor networks
Both faculties have networks of tutors to assist those preparing for the MJDF assessment. Increasingly, the activities of these two separate networks will be combined to provide joint teaching for the MJDF.

Candidates should use this selectively. It is not a list of all resources available and candidates should, in particular, be reminded of their personal responsibility to ensure that their knowledge is up to date and that they are aware of contemporary developments and issues in dental treatment. Documentation
If you hold a permanent (current) GDC registration number it is not necessary for you to submit your dental degree or registration documents.
Candidates whose names do not appear in the current UK dentists register (General Dental Council) must submit evidence (in the form of original documentation or certified copies*) of the following:
a) Your primary dental qualification, together with the date of acquisition. The qualification you hold is referred to on the following website http://avicenna.ku.dk/database/medicine/.
b) Registration document
*Copies of letters and certificates will only be accepted if they have been verified as a true copy. Attested copies must bear an original signature and official stamp (e.g. hospital stamp, public notary stamp). Copies can be attested by a GMC or GDC registered doctor or dentist. Official English translations from a translation agency will be required for stamps or certificates that are not in English.
